MISE-EN-SCENCE ANALYSIS

The movie I have chosen to analyze is Call Me By Your Name. Call Me by Your Name (2017) is a romantic drama directed by Luca Guadagnino, based on the novel by AndrĂ© Aciman. Set in the summer of 1983 in northern Italy, the film follows 17-year-old Elio Perlman, a brilliant and musically gifted teenager, who develops a deep and passionate relationship with Oliver, a 24-year-old graduate student assisting Elio’s father. As the summer progresses, their bond grows into a profound romance filled with longing, self-discovery, and bittersweet emotion. The film beautifully captures themes of first love, identity, and the fleeting nature of time, culminating in an emotionally powerful and nostalgic ending.

Location/Settings=The movie begins with Elio’s summer house in Northern Italy as we can see in the picture above. The house is a classic European summer house in the countryside, and we can see this by the way it is an open house with no air conditioning and there is sunshine shining through the house entirely with long vast fields of grass and trees and flowers surrounding it entirely. The furniture and the way the house is shaped aids even further to the European summer aesthetic. The setting of this movie is what makes it so aesthetically pleasing to the viewer because of the way it captures a summer in Italy with beautiful scenery, authentic vintage Italian buildings and nature.

Costume/Hair/Makeup=  The costumes and outfits that the characters in the movie would wear would always be pastel colors and very lightweight big, oversized button-up collared shirts with vintage jorts. They wear vintage Italian converse for their shoes. They accessorize with sunglasses and bracelets. The hair of the characters throughout the entire movie stays very messy, and with a beach feel as the characters are constantly running around and doing summer activities. They usually for the entire remind bare faced with almost no makeup.

Lighting/ Color= The lighting throughout the entire movie is very warm toned because of the European summer aesthetic is trying to convey. We also always see tones of green and vibrant colors alluding to the nature surrounding our characters with very iridescent lighting. The lighting helps the audience feel very dream like and we can conclude this adds onto the idea of nothing good last forever just like the summer our characters are currently living.

Facial Expression/Body Expression= Our two characters facial expression are always exceptionally soft toned, the eye contact the two of them share helps us always realize the burning desire the two of them have for on another. Their body expression is always open to one another as they are hugging constantly or touching hands. We can tell the two of them share a special connection through their body language.

Blocking/Proximity= They are always in proximity with one another and their bodies are constantly touching one another in some shape or form.

SOUND PROJECT

https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://youtu.be/ut_cjB8SC4Q?feature=shared__;!!ByahdB3sbQ!-OpjNMdeasRE-m_S2tFKgpVC--HhFJ4UASHjCsGl57zsr8DKTePzc8thGm2o7pKfKKkeqQtO9LUCpNGxAmSy6ZBPSpfHXMRB9BUa8RFz$

Our goal from this project was to be leaving school. We were making this in school so we all collectively agreed that this would be the easiest one to do.  We started with being in school and you can assume we are because you hear writing and then the bell ringing, we put background music in the classroom but it was a little too loud so it sounded like a cafeteria. Then we used walking noise to seem like walking through the hallway going to our locker but the footsteps were way too loud so it sounded like bouncing basketballs. We then executed the locker scene pretty well because the sounds of the locker reverberating just how they do when the students open their lockers at the end of the day. Then we had more walking like out of the school which was also bad walking because when we filmed it with Kennedys shoes which are slippers so if we had used sneakers or some hard platform shoe, the sound would have been clearer and more concise. Then we recorded myself saying goodbye, everyone have a good day which I believe was the best decision because it really just personified the administration telling us to have a good day at the end of school. Lastly, we used sounds from the internet of a door opening and closing to portray us walking out of school and then car audios like me unlocking my car with a key and them turning on the car and then finally a fading sound of me driving away then it ended. Throughout the whole video we had background noise of talking which i think gave a good of how noisy the hallway truly is but i think i should've lowered it in the classroom and in the parking lot.

Editing Techniques Analysis

1. Simutinaletly

The idea was to have a simultaneous meal with Kennedy in different locations while using the bathroom in the same location. The video started with a medium shot of Kennedy and me talking together , followed by me going to my locker alone and complaining about my stomach aching and having to use the bathroom The clip then transitions to kennedy talking with Alejuanda in a different location and she complains about her stomach hurting as well. The sequence then transitions to us running into the bathroom together, experiencing the same thing in two different places but finally coming together to use the bathroom. The execution of the video is commendable, but some may find it confusing without further explanation.

2. Contrast
For contrast we decided to do like a fake friend vibe. So we had Alejandra and Colbie talking about how much Alejandra loved me.We then used a clip of Alejandra calling me and then I turned around with a really mean look on my face acting as if I don't like Alejandra. Then we had Micheal chin help us and he was supposed to represent the boy that Alejandra liked and then I come and I push her out of the way and walk with him as I steal her moment with him and continues to be a bad friend. So it is kind of comparing two different scenes that are the same. It shows the reality of how Alejandra has this perspective of me being nice to others but in reality I treat her terribly. This one was hard to film because it was really funny trying to act mad at each other so we had to keep changing characters and keep changing the script to make it work.

3. Symbolism
We struggled to come up with an idea, but Ms Harwell inspired us to use the phone box to symbolize detachment from the world. We began by showing Kennedy and Alejandra watching TikTok and listening to music, then being late to class due to their phone usage. They continued using their phones even while walking into class. The audio was used to portray the separation, with the group walking to the phone bin and then closing it. The sound of talking stops, and the group is seen in the distance sitting down in their table. We  suggested that we could have improved our acting by highlighting the separation from society and the feelings of sadness or anxiety experienced by us.

4. Parllelism

The editing process was challenging, with the goal of portraying the same girl in the same school doing the same thing years in the future. Kendall, a blonde, was used to close her locker, and then a flash to Colbie another blonde, closing her locker four years later. This connection between the characters was shown in the future. However, there was room for improvement by adding more storylines, such as Kendall facing a fear or improving her skills, to enhance the connection between the characters.

5. Leit Motif
The use of Mr. Groothius, known for blowing his whistle at students to get to class or put their phones away, was used in a video. The clip features him blowing his whistle, followed by a shot of Alejandra and Kennedy walking in the hall with a whistle sound in the background. A clip of someone snatching Alejandra's hand was used to show his actions. The whistle sound was used to convey the idea that Mr. Groothius takes phones and if you can hear the whistle you know its him coming but a video of him blowing his whistle followed would have been more effective.
